"Oh yeah. I can FLY."
spazzkat,
solarbird, and I just got back from seeing Iron Man. And okay, yeah, sure, we're a week late to the party... but now at least I can join my voice to the chorus of DUDE THAT TOTALLY ROCKED.
I'd already seen this mentioned all over the place, but yeah, Robert Downey Jr.? Completely owned this movie. Also? He'd never been on my radar before, but I'll give him this--definitely hot. Nice arms!
Gwyneth Paltrow, very nice as Pepper. Cool and efficient and elegant and absolutely smitten with her boss, yet quite capable of giving him shit. "I'll give myself a week." "Oh yeah? What's your social security number?" "........ five!" Also? Definitely hot. Gorgeous blue dress in that dancing-and-almost-smooching scene.
Jeff Bridges, he doesn't get to get ogled, but I will give him an excellent portrayal of a bad guy who moves from merely oily and opportunistic at the beginning to outright batshit insane at the end. Took me quite a while to visually adjust to the sight of him beefy and bald, too. I mean, hell, I still remember a much younger Jeff Bridges in Starman. ;)
Very effective death scene at the beginning, with Tony's compatriot Yinsen giving his life to help him escape. Nicely understated on the part of the dude playing Yinsen, and as for Downey, he did a great job there with his expressions conveying what his lines didn't.
I was pleased to see the blonde reporter chick actually remain an effective character even after she let Tony seduce her, and being quite willing to further confront him when she felt it appropriate. Which of course leads into the entire sequence of Iron Man's first mission, and that leads into ZOMG THE SUIT.
DUDE. SO PRETTY. SO COOL. Hell, just watching him build the thing was bitchin'. That holographic computer interface? SWEET. I want one. Complete with the snarky Brit-voiced AI. And the flight tests! Bwahaha! Plus, I <3 the robot arms. They kept reminding me of the scutters from Red Dwarf, and Tony giving constant shit to the one with the fire extinguisher was hysterical.
And oh man, the visual contrast between Tony's suit and Obadiah's--so very striking. The sleek red-and-gold against the big hulking iron monster was striking enough, but when they went airborne, I loved too that Obadiah's suit was a lot less elegant about it, spewing a much bigger smoke trail behind him.
And the ending: muah! We knew of course that Tony wouldn't stick to the "prepared statement", but YAY right out with it: "I am Iron Man." Reporters go absolutely NUTS, boom, credits roll. Beautiful. :D
Bring on Iron Man 2!
