Shiny new and updated GreatBigSea.com, Part II
Mad props to [info]otoselkie for pointing this out: the shiny new revamped greatbigsea.com, if you haven't noticed it already, has a new version of a song player clickable on the front page. It's got not one, not two, but three new songs off the new album on it: "Walk On The Moon", "Here and Now", and "Love Me Tonight".

Picoreview: this is GBS getting back to a more pop-type sound, which I don't like as much as their trad, and yet, I certainly like this just fine. ;) Interesting too that these songs have a bit more musical muscle behind them than past pop-flavored GBS; if you compare the style here against oh, say, the lighter touch on Something Beautiful*, it's pretty noticeable. And ooh--of note on both "Here and Now" and "Love Me Tonight", we have a bit of a departure from older style here in how they're doing the bridges. Some ear-catching stuff here on the part of The Doyle. Oh yeah. Bring me this album now.

It is also worth mentioning that this new player on the site also has three older Great Big Sea songs which are very worth listening to if you're not familiar with them: "Consequence Free", "Feel It Turn", and the holiest of holy Great Big Sea songs, the one for which this journal is named... "Ordinary Day".

Go! Listen! Enjoy!

You probably already know this, but Russel Crowe is going to be on American Chopper on TLC. (I think this coming week, but I could be wrong on the timing.)

I did not know this, in fact! I've been too busy ogling towards Newfoundland to give Australia its due mileage for a while. ;) What's he doing on there?

Getting a custom motorcycle is my guess. :) I only saw the commercial, but that's usually what one is doing on that show. :)

Heh, okay! Thanks for the tip. Probably not interesting enough to me to tune in for; I mean, if I want some random Russell ogling, that's what I've got that Folsom Prison Blues video for. ;D

He brings the OCC guys down to his ranch in Australia for a working vacation. At one point, they play rugby with him and his team. It's pretty interesting, but it's three hour-long episodes. However, there is a good bit of Russell spread throughout them.

My advice? Record now, watch later the bits that interest you. :D

Heh, Russell's cute and all, but he's not quite cute enough to make me go out of my way to watch TV I wouldn't otherwise watch. I've got barely enough time to cram Battlestar, the Doctor, and Lost into my TV watching schedule anyway!

I shall clearly have to make this up to Russell later. I'm jonesing for another viewing of Master and Commander. ^_^

Discovered the other night that this is apparently a new episode. Which makes four episodes that Russell's been in :D Guess I'm taping this one, too.

Just to let you know...you didn't miss anything! He was on there for maybe four minutes. Glad I recorded it and watched later :D

I think it's great that they are pushing "Walking On The Moon" as the first single and video.

The song I am waiting for is "Straight To Hell."

Oh, and there's an excellent article here:

I was just reading that very article last night! Very good one indeed, and it was neat to see something of the thought processes that went into this album. Some of the fans might be going "AIGH THIS IS DIFFERENT WE DON'T LIKE IT"--but I'm glad they're challenging themselves and looking for new things to do with their music. It'll keep it interesting for them--and keep them around for us. ;)

And I am very, very much looking forward to hearing "Straight to Hell". :D

Personally, I think GBS fans are going to rally to whatever they give us.

Look at the point about "The Hard and the Easy." That was a gamble that worked.

By the way, if anyone saw them in Toronto and Ottawa two years ago, I highly recommend Cord Lund's equally "different" album, "Horse Soldier, Horse Soldier."

Yeah, probably. There are GBS songs I like less than others, and ones I don't typically listen to, but I think I'm biologically incapable of really disliking anything they do! ;)

Cord Lund: not familiar with this person! Thanks for the recommendation. :)

Corb, actually, I always misspell it.

He is an Alberta-based country singer who was the warmup act for the 'Boys in Ottawa and Toronto in July 2006.

I went Googling and found that spelling, yeah--apparently others make the same mistake!

Cool, another person to add to the list of Opening Acts for GBS That I Need to Check Out. Thanks again. :)

I know it. I just mis-type.

Go to his website.

Great stuff.

I think the best place to get his CDs, since you live in the U.S., is www.cdbaby.com Check out Dust Rhions there, too.

Corb's latest CD was being released in the U.S., in the country market.

I was poking around on his web page earlier, yeah, it looked very nicely put together. I'll give it some more time and see if he has some samples or something I can listen to, or perhaps I can find him on iTunes!

I'll have to put him in the queue behind a couple other groups and individuals I need to check it out, though--further ahead of him on the list of People Who Have Opened for GBS Whose Albums I Want are Jeremy Fisher and Liam Titcomb. :)
